El Cajon Sprinklers arranges irrigation line repair in El Cajon and East County through local irrigation contractors. A broken sprinkler pipe shows up as water where it should not be: a soggy patch on one zone, a sunken spot in the lawn, or a puddle that appears whether the system is running or not. Which of those you see says a lot about which pipe broke.
A broken line costs $150 to $400 to repair; leave it running and soil washes into the pipe, and every head downstream clogs, which adds $65 to $90 a head to the bill.
$150 to $400 per break
Repairing a broken sprinkler pipe in El Cajon typically costs $150 to $400, depending on the type of pipe, how deep it runs, the soil and how long it has been leaking (HomeGuide, February 2026). Major leaks that have run for a long time cost more than small breaks caught early.

- A wet or sunken patch on one zone that never dries out
- Water rising from the ground with every zone off (a mainline break)
- Weak pressure on a zone that used to be strong
- Mud or soil coming out of the heads when the zone starts
- A geyser from the ground between heads
- The water meter dial moving with every tap and zone off
Lateral or mainline
A lateral is the pipe between a zone valve and its heads. It is only under pressure when that zone runs, so a lateral break shows up as a problem on one zone at a time. The mainline runs from the water supply to the valves and stays under pressure all day. A mainline break leaks constantly, which makes it the more urgent repair and the one most likely to show up on the water bill first.
Turning the system off at the controller stops a lateral leak. It does not stop a mainline leak; that needs the irrigation shutoff valve, or the main water valve if there is no separate one.
What breaks pipe in East County yards
- Shovels, post-hole diggers and fence installers working without marking the lines
- Tree and shrub roots wrapping and cracking shallow pipe
- Clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, stressing joints
- Old pipe gone brittle, especially thin-wall pipe used on older systems
- High static pressure with no regulator, which works on every fitting
Clay is the local factor. The USDA soil survey maps Spring Valley, Santee and Lemon Grove on Diablo clay, a soil that shrinks and cracks as it dries and swells when it wets. Pipe laid in it moves every season.

The break is located, the soil is dug back to expose sound pipe on both sides, and the damaged section is cut out and replaced with new pipe and couplings, or with a slip-fix repair coupling where there is room. The zone is then flushed with the end heads open before they go back on, so the dirt that got into the pipe at the break does not end up in every nozzle.
In the sandy loam on top of El Cajon's Placentia soil, digging is quick. Where the pipe sits in the clay below, or under a walkway, it takes longer, which is most of the spread in the price.
Leaks you cannot see
If the water bill climbed but nothing is visibly wet, the leak may be underground and draining into the soil. That is a different job, covered on leak detection.
Water coming up with everything off?
That is the mainline. Close the irrigation shutoff or the main valve and call. A mainline leak runs every minute of every day until it is fixed.

How much does it cost to fix a broken sprinkler pipe in El Cajon?
Typically $150 to $400. Deeper pipe, clay soil, pipe under hardscape and leaks that have run for a long time cost more.
What are the signs of a broken irrigation line?
A wet or sunken patch that never dries, weak pressure on one zone, mud from the heads, or water rising with every zone off.
Why is water coming up when the sprinklers are off?
That usually means a mainline break, since the mainline stays under pressure all day. Close the irrigation shutoff and call.
Do I need to replace the whole line?
Usually not. A break is cut out and replaced with a short section. Whole-line replacement makes sense only when old, brittle pipe keeps cracking in new places.
Why are my sprinkler heads clogged after a pipe repair?
Dirt gets into the pipe at the break. The zone should be flushed with the end heads off before they go back on.
Often done together
- Irrigation leak detectionThe bill went up, the meter keeps turning, and the yard looks exactly the same as it did last month.
- Sprinkler head replacementSnapped by a mower, stuck down, spraying the wall or bubbling at the base: the most common repair there is.
- El Cajon Sprinklers: Sprinkler Repair in Spring ValleyClay that swells and cracks, on slopes of 15 to 50 percent: a hard place for pipe and an easy place for runoff.
Tell us which zone is acting up
Say what you are seeing (a geyser, a dry patch, a zone that will not shut off, a timer that went blank) and roughly how big the yard is. You will hear what the fix usually involves and what it tends to cost before anyone comes out.
